The wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park includes tidewater and valley glaciers, snow-capped mountains, miles of coastline, fjords, and freshwater rivers. Gustavus is a picturesque community located 50 air miles west of Juneau. Spread across a large plain created by receding glaciers, Gustavus is surrounded by Glacier Bay National Park.
Day 1
Air taxi from Juneau to Gustavus. This is a fascinating half-hour flight over snow-capped mountains and ice fields. Explore the small community of Gustavus for the day. Then go on the Point Adolphus whale watching cruise.
Point Adolphus has the largest congregation of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle and is arguably the best place in Southeast Alaska to watch them.
Overnight lodging included at the Glacier Bay Lodge.
Day 2
The Glacier Bay Cruise is an eight hour cruise on a well-equiped tour boat with full view windows, often accompanied by a Park Service Ranger/Cultural Interpreter. Lunch is included. Glacier Bay National Park now encompasses over 3 million acres, and is often referred to as one of the Crown Jewels of the National Park system.
In addition to spectacular scenery, there are plentiful wildlife viewing opportunities with a wide variety of seabirds, marine and land mammals.
In addition, you may see chunks of ice as "big as the governor's mansion" peel off the glacier sounding like fire crackers shattering on impact with the bay's surface. Overnight included.
Day 3
Have a nice leisurely breakfast in Gustavus before your flight back to Juneau where your tour concludes.
